Gown Regulations at UCL
University College London was a founding college of the University of London, the first university to devise a system of academic dress based on faculty colours. Since it received its degree awarding powers in 2007 UCL have had their own distinct hood design.
The bachelor gowns used at UCL are classified as a b4 style gown, with long, bell-shaped, open ended sleeves (see Shaw's Academical Dress Of Great Britain And Ireland 2011, Burgon Society, for more information). Masters gowns are very similar, but with longer sleeves and closed, crescent shaped ends that end around mid-calf. Both gowns are matte-black.
PhD gowns are made in the b4 cut using light-grey polyester / wool, with red satin lapels (front facings), and upturned sleeves with a light-grey satin highlight.
Mortarboard Regulations at UCL
Matte-black mortarboards are required to be worn by all Bachelor and Masters graduates at the university, and must be made from either wool, felt, or a blend of the two materials. PhD graduates wear matte-black PhD style bonnets.
Mortarboards are designed with an unfixed black tassel, which is moved from the left to the right when receiving your certificate. We are proud to be the official supplier to universities around the world of our uniquely design flexible-fit mortarboards. These are made with a foam-laminate cup, allowing the mortarboards to be flat-packed for storage, and spring into shape when removed from the packaging. This looks much better and provides for a much more secure fit than any other soft mortarboard on the market.
Hood Regulations at UCL
Unlike many international and UK universities - which differentiate hoods by degree - UCL use a much smaller variety of hood styles, with one hood used by all bachelor students, and a small variety of designs used for different levels of study.
We provide a large range of hoods for UCL bachelor, masters and PhD graduates, and work hard to ensure the colours and shapes used match the requirements of the university, so you won't look out of place. Please take a look at the full university regulations for more information.
